Life without a refrigerator: Will it be chilled anymore?

What if refrigerators were never invented? What if no one ever thought about a machine that could make your hotwater cold and preserve your food for days without rotting? Imagine living in a world without cold drinks and ice creams. You cannot, right?

A refrigerator also called a “fridge,” is household equipment made up of a thermally insulated compartment and a heat pump that transfers heat from inside to outside. This allows the internal part of the fridge to get cold, below room temperature.

How was life before refrigerators? (A brief history)

Refrigerators have become an integral part of everyone’s life. It serves as an electrical appliance and is part of our daily routine. One of the essential kitchen appliances for maintaining food safety is a refrigerator. When the electricity fails or the appliance malfunctions, jeopardizing the security of our food, you immediately remind yourself of its significance to our everyday lives. Nowadays, refrigerators and cooling systems are used everywhere, houses, laboratories, restaurants, hospitals and where not?

In the late eighteenth century, people used to collect ice during monsoons and cold seasons and construct ice houses to store and preserve things. They even kept ice wrapped in a cloth underground, so it could later be used during the summer. However, an icebox was developed by American entrepreneur Thomas Moore to deliver chilled dairy goods. Before he received a patent for a “refrigerator” in 1803, he referred to it as a “refrigiratory.”

Why are refrigerators so important?

Today this “ice box” advanced into a refrigerator is a very important technology to keep things cold. However, have you ever wondered why you could not live without it, even for a day? Even a small power failure for an hour or so makes you uneasy. Below is a list of reasons which makes refrigerators so significant and a need of the hour.

1. Preserving food

Whether you  a double-door, a small one or a big one, every fridge is important for preserving household food items. Cool environments lower the rate at which bacterias grow, thus preventing day-long food from getting rotten.

For instance, if you leave milk at ambient temperature on the kitchen counter, germs will contaminate the milk in two to three hours. The milk will stay fresh for a week or two if the temperature is low.

2. Keeping things cool at a large scale

Small size 170L refrigerators are common household appliances. However, huge commercial fridges of sizes more than 250L are used in commercial places such as restaurants and bars. These can accommodate a great amount of stuff in it and keep all the things cool at once. It also has a bigger freezer to store more meat and cold drink bottles.

3. Preserving medicines and medical instruments

In large pharmaceutical companies, it is necessary to preserve certain bacteria or living organisms. This is where refrigerators play a crucial role. Also, strains that produce drugs and medicines are kept in extremely controlled environments, typically at very low temperatures. Therefore, most medical and pharmaceutical activities rely on the availability of sophisticated refrigerator systems.

4. Other industry-related applications

Refrigeration systems are required to acquire the products of crystallizations, distillations, or condensations, which all need heat removal. Therefore, industries like electricity production and chemical and petrochemicals also require the need of refrigerators and cooling systems.

Conclusion

Consider what it would be like to live in a time before refrigerators. Imagine needing ice cubes or even ice boxes to keep your food cold. Without refrigerators, life would be much more difficult. Refrigerators have not only made lives easier but also more convenient. There are several benefits and applications of a refrigerator across different work areas. With time, the appliance keeps getting smart and more customer-friendly, with new features and advances.
